“The point is, not to resist the flow. You go up when you’re supposed to go up and down when you’re supposed to go down. When you’re supposed to go up, find the highest tower and climb to the top. When you’re supposed to go down, find the deepest well and go down to the bottom. When there’s no flow, stay still. If you resist the flow, everything dries up.” - Haruki Murakami, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

From the NYTimes: "A Penn professor and poverty expert serves as a juror in a Philadelphia murder trial and finds 'there is an abstraction in most of the literature and in most of what I have written.' The trial leaves him in crisis, with questions about himself, the accused and the victim: 'Who were these men, only a piece of whose lives were laid in front of us?' And so he visits the defendant after his acquittal, only to find that still 'ambiguities remain unresolved, contradictions abound, ends dangle.'”

DOMA challenge underway in MA!

From Yes Means Yes (via Feministing), a great note in defense of women who struggle with leaving abusive relationships: "It doesn't mean she is stupid. Leaving an abusive partner is hard - really, really hard. Some studies have shown that it takes an average woman 4-7 tries before she can leave her abuser for good. Why? Because abusers aren't transparent assholes all of the time. They can be very manipulative, and most of the time will wear down their partner's self-esteem quite thoroughly long before they start with the physical violence. They're also often charming and can be very loving and doting and romantic when they're not being violent. They can talk real pretty about what they've learned, how sorry they are, how they're going to change, how they can't change without the help of their wo/man. And of course, we want to believe that we haven't been so blind in choosing a partner for ourselves."

Domestic violence advocates hail the decision, with some bloggers noting that it's one more reason why Ginsburg's presence as the only woman on the High court is so important."

Whole Wide World

I know I'm always saying good things about This American Life but...they are all true!  I just fully listened to and absorbed the episode "Somewhere Out There" and, in addition to reminding me how much I loved The American Tail as a child, I was blown away by Act Two.  Act Two, called "Tom Girls," introduces us to two incredible little girls with a few things in common - among them, they were both born male.  The piece is so well done and moving, and it's a thrill to be reminded how smart and perceptive kids are.  I wish I could stand by those kids and protect them against all the challenges they face.  Their bravery is inspiring.

The rest of the episode is great too, and even has the added bonus of ending with a great song: "Whole Wide World" by Wreckless Eric (the video is not great quality but it's the best I could find...).
